The Kungur Ice Caves & Belaya Gora Monastery excursion

Belaya Gora (White Mountain) Monastery is the biggest cathedral in the Urals, just off the road from Perm to Kungur. Ever since ancient times, the monastery served as a place for salvation and pray. In the orthodox community, the monastery is known for its strict regulations. Monks who had broken moral and legal norms were sent to Belaya Gora for improvement, even from very far away places.The view from the height of the Belaya Gora (White Mountain or Hill) Monastery is located at 360 degrees is absolutely picturesque and amazing with its beautiful forest landscapes around of the Urals at any season. Kungur, the third and one of the oldest cities in the Perm province is famous for two things: its rich history as a wealthy trade (especially tea) town and its peculiar Kungur Ice Caves. Although caves are very common in the whole Ural Mountain area, none are so rich in history and are so well-known in Russia as the cave in the bowels of the Kungur Ice Mountain. According to scientists, the cave is 10-12 thousand years of age. Some 100 grottoes and 60 lakes are connected by nearly 6 kilometres of fancifully-branched underground passages. The grottoes host stalagmite columns, stalactite icicles (reaching over 2 metres) and ice / snow patterns. The route of the excursion: leave Perm through the start of what used to be the Siberian Trakt, stop at Belaya Gora (good place for pictures), further to Kungur, passing Kungur's historical centre, excurion in the ice caves (1,5 hours), lunch at the Kungur ice caves, back to Perm.
