1, Tue   Arrival at any Moscow airport.
    Transfer from airport to hotel in Moscow. Hotel lies just outside the city centre, but has its own metro station (6 stops from the Red Square). Guide will help with check-in and necessary visa registration.
    Overnight stay in hotel.
 
2, Wed 09.00 Breakfast.
  10.00 - 14.00 Moscow city excursion. Naturally, the main attractions of Russia's capital are among the places of visit: the Red Square, Kremlin, Arbat and Bolshoi Theatre.
    Free time to spend in Moscow. Overnight stay in hotel.
 
3, Thu 09.00 Breakfast.
  10.00 - 14.00 Free time in Moscow.
  14.00 Transfer from the hotel to the Kazansky train station.
  15.57 Departure to Ekaterinburg by the high-quality train "Ural Express". The train follows a part of the epic Trans Siberian Railroad, coming through Tatarstan's capital Kazan and crossing the Volga as it approaches the Urals. The guide will help with check-in on the train and see you off. Train tickets are on basis of 4-person compartments (group will be kept together), upgrade to 1st class 2-person compartment possible.
 
4, Fri 20.32 Arrival in Ekaterinburg, current capital and economical heart of the Urals. Transfer from train station to hotel. Dinner, overnight stay in hotel.
 
5, Sat 09:00 Breakfast.
  10:00 City excursion in Ekaterinburg, including the historical square, the city pond, the dam and the monument of the founder of Ekaterinburg: Peter the Great. Subsequently a visit to the Monastery of the Romanovs. This site, some 15kms outside the city, marks the place where the family of Nikolai Romanov (former Tsar of Russia) was murdered and buried.
  15:00 Free time in Ekaterinburg.
    Overnight stay in Ekaterinburg hotel.
 
6, Sun 08:00 Breakfast.
  09.00 Departure from Ekaterinburg by (mini)bus.
  10.30 - 13.00 Sightseeing tour in Nyevyansk (Inclined Tower, Transfiguration Temple).
  13.00 - 14.00 On road to Nizhny Tagil.
  14.00 Lunch in a cafe in Nizhny Tagil.
  15.00 - 18.00 Nizhny Tagil sightseeing tour (Museum of local lore, Fox Mountain, Factory Museum).
  18.00 - 20.00 On road to Katchkanar.
  20.00 Arrival at Katchkanar hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
 
7, Mon 08.00 Breakfast.
  09.00 Departure to Chusovoy. On the road (crossing the Ural Mountain range) crossing of Ekaterinburg and Perm province border. Stop at the border obelisk of Asia and Europe. As we pass through the town of Gornozavodsk (literally: "mountain plant town") we shortly visit the local Mineral Museum, where all (unique) minerals of the Urals can be admired.
  13.00 - 16.00 Arrival in Chusovoy. Excursion at the open-air Historical Museum of the Chusovaya River. This unique museum was built by one man only. Main themes are Ermak (the conquerer of Siberia, who was from the region) and village life of people from the Chusovaya area in the 18th century. Picknick at the museum.
  16.00 - 18.00 Visit to Soviet repression camp "Perm-36", the only of its kind remaining in Russia and currently funded by UNESCO. "Perm-36" was one of the harshest camps for 'political prisoners' during the Soviet era. Excursion round the camp: the barracks, walls, extreme regime prison cells and several expositions.
  18.30 Arrival at "Takmanaykha", one of the regions best ski resorts, just north of Chusovoy. Although the ski tracks will be closed, quiet and nature-based Takmanaykha offers good rooms and possibilities for a walk in the forest or along the Vylva river. Dinner, banya (Russian sauna) and overnight stay.
 
8, Tue 09.00 Breakfast.
  10.00 Departure to Solikamsk (literally "salts of Kama"): the "salt cellar" of Russia and one of the most historical cities in the Urals. The road leads through beautiful landscape, past the towns of Gubakha, Kizel, Us'va and Alexandrovsk.
  15:00 - 17:30 Solikamsk Regional Museum, followed by excursion in historical center of the town (Voyevoda's house, a climb in Cathedral bell-tower and visit to the museums of local lore and history, situated in the ancient buildings of the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Epiphany church).
  18:00 Dinner and overnight stay at new hotel in Solikamsk.
 
9, Wed 08.00 Breakfast.
  09.00 - 13.00 Excursion in a modern salt mine of Russia's main salt exporters "Silvinit"! In full miner's outfit, an expert mine engineer will show the mine shafts and the place where the actual salt mining is done.
  13.00 Lunch at the engineer canteen of the mine complex.
  14.00 - 15.00 On road to Cherdyn, an ancient town on the banks of the large Kolva River. Cherdyn was the very first settlement in Prikamye, the Perm province.
  15.00 - 17.00 Sightseeing in Cherdyn and visits to the Regional Museum, the Religious History Museum and the Kolva river bank.
  18.00 Accommodation in high-comfort wooden guest house, which lies in the picturesque area on the Kolva river close to Cherdyn. Dinner, sauna, overnight stay.
 
10, Thu 09.00 Breakfast.
  10.00 - 14.00 Trip to the settlement of Nyrob (place of confinement of Mikhail Nikitich Romanov - uncle of Russia's first Tsar and brother-in-law of Ivan the Terrible - in 1601). Sightseeing in the taiga nearby the historical village of Iskor. Beautiful views from "Narrow Street" and "Broad Street" rocks.
  14.00 - 15.00 Lunch in Cherdyn.
  14.00 - 17.00 On route to Perm, cultural heart and second city of the Urals, famous for its opera and ballet (Diaghilev, Anna Pavlova) theatre and its mighty Kama River (4th largest river in Europe, arguably even the largest). During Soviet era, Perm was one of the most closed cities of Russia, because of huge war industry in and around the city.
  18.00 Arrival at hotel in very heart of Perm's city centre. Hotel was completely renovated in 2004. Dinner, overnight stay.
 
11, Fri 08.00 - 10:00 Breakfast.
  11.00 - 15.00 Perm sightseeing tour. Among visits are: Motovilikha open-air museum of war industry, monument to Mikhail Romanov (officially last Tsar of Russia, who was killed in Perm), Sibiria street, the Chaikovsky Opera & Ballet theatre, Kama river, Diaghilev's mansion, Perm city bazaar, etc.
  15.00 Free time, overnight stay in hotel.
 
12, Sat 08.00 - 10.0 Breakfast.
  10.00 - 13.00 On route to Kungur. Halfway, short sightseeing at Belaya Gora, the largest monastery of the Urals. The monastery with its huge golden domes is situated on a hill and offers an impressive view over the surrounding green landscape.
  13.00 - 16.00 Excursion in the famous Kungur Ice Caves. Short sifgtseeing tour in the centre of Kungur. Surprise lunch.
  16.00 - 18.00 Back to Perm.
  18.00 Free time in Perm. Overnight stay in hotel.

  06.00 Transfer to Perm airport
  07.40 Flight to Moscow
  07.30 Arrival Moscow Airport Sheremtyevo-1. Onward flight.

Sum includes:

  • Tour program as described, including all excursions and entry fees;
  • Meals as described;
  • Use of (upper) tourist class hotels;
  • Service of English speaking guide during whole tour, except during the train trip;
  • Visa invitations and registrations of visa on arrival.

Sum is based on double room accommodation. Single room surcharge (2 nights Moscow, 2 nights Ekaterinburg, 1 night Solikamsk, 3 nights Perm): 255 euro.
Upgrade to 1st class 2-person compartment on train Moscow - Ekaterinburg: 150 euro.
 
For those who would like this tour as an add-on on their existing tour in Russia, it is also possible to book this tour without Moscow (day 1-3) and without air ticket on day 13. Travel sum 1.765 euro p.p.
